The Dark Side of Social Media

Malini Murmu a student of the prestigious IIM Bangalore committed suicide a few days back because her boyfriend dumped her via a status update on Facebook.  His status update read “Feeling cool today. Dumped my girlfriend. Happy independence day.” What a mean bloke! The hunt is on for this guy who seems to have deleted his Facebook account. The case clearly highlights the deep-rooted connection between real life and Social-Media life. A mere status update was enough to drive a bright young mind to the level of suicide. Ironically September 10th was World Suicide prevention day and the theme this year being preventing suicides. At-least try spreading the message now guys and make people aware of it. Life has its own ups and downs but please do not resort to suicide. Just imagine the trauma the girl’s parents might be going through. Here is a bit of information on World suicide Prevention.

World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on September 10 every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world. The observance is sponsored and endorsed by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The theme in 2011 is Preventing Suicide in Multicultural Societies.

SUICIDE FACTS:

  • One million people in the world die each year as a result of suicide.
  • Females attempt suicide four times more often than males but males succeed three times more often than females making the overall suicide rate to be 75% for men and 25% of women.
  • 1 in 65,000 children ages 10 to 14 commit suicide each year.
  • 95% of suicide victims have a psychiatric disorder.
  • Alcohol and drugs are 36% and 16% factors respectively for all suicide victims.
  • According to WHO report, depression is the #1 disability in the world.
  • Worldwide, the most common method of suicide is hanging for males and poisoning (overdose) for females.
Is it really necessary to share all the details of your life on Facebook including your relationship status? Even relationship status seems fine but the break-up update was the limit. Lets hope such incidents never happen. Life is not all about Social Media people.

  1. It is tragic what happened to that girl. I got dumped once by email and that was bad enough!
It is great to see you responding by promoting information about suicide prevention. It is something we all need to talk about more so that people don’t feel so isolated. In Australia we recently had R U OK day. They suggest that if we are worried about someone, ask them R U OK and it may be just the opening for them to talk to someone.

  2. That is a great initiative. It is a great way to curb such incidents as depression seems to be the main factor which drives people to suicide.

  3. This is so sad. It is important to distance our life from social media. It can really make or break a person.

  5. There are some really sad people out there – from both sexes. Unfortunately the likes of Facebook and other social media make it easy to act in a cowardly way towards others who may be vulnerable. Thanks for publishing this – Sympathy to all who have suffered.

  9. Dumping happens dude. Blaming facebook for that is not right. Facebook’s name is added in the media reports just to make the story sell. Of-course, it might have triggered her decision to end her life. But then again, she should have known her worth. I am not sympathizing with a coward like her. What did she gain by ending her life?

  11. A tragic event, but it brings something to light.
Facebook and google may have become the “oxygen” of today, but we need to draw a line somewhere.
It is such posts that make me wonder if my college is actually right in preventing social sites from opening on the college net.

    • People need to draw the line between real world and virtual world..What they don’t realize is humiliation in the virtual world affects a lot in the real world too!
